'The River Ran Red' Lyrics

Words and Music - Brian Fraser. From the album 'Don't Ask Me'.

He died in a pool of blood, in the Forth Pub hall,

He led a tough and hard life, his eyes said it all,

I don't know where he from, I can't tell where he's been,

But he still lives there today, Ernie's heard he's never seen.

Well they'd see him every morning, with his best friend by his side.

A labrador named 'Hey You', walking by the river side.

Well everyone liked Ernie, then a shot rang out one night,

Ernie's dog stopped breathin', the night that he died.

Well you still hear him the bar, you can feel him in the hall,

He's never far away, and he's no trouble at all,

He's just trying to forget, the times he had it all

And the night, the Forth river ran red.

And it's a peaceful little place, lying in a valley green.

But in September 1972, things happened they'd never seen.

Well fire lit the night, and the Forth Pub it burned.

And Ernie copped a .22, lord when his back was turned.

Well he died in a pool of blood, in the Forth pub hall,

He was a kind and gentle man, his eyes said it all.

He still visits now and then, perhaps just to say hello,

Or maybe just to remind us, just how quick our lives can go.

Well I've heard him in the bar, I felt him in the hall,

He's never far away, and he's no trouble at all.

He's just trying to forget, the times he had it all.

And the night, the Forth river ran red.
